A tropical to subtropical evergreen tree indigenous to the forests of West tropical Africa that can reach 20 ft. More widely known for its poisonous properties than as an edible fruit, this plant was brought to Jamaica by Capt. Bligh to furnish food for the slaves.

Considered the national fruit of Jamaica, it is definitely a favorite food of the Island—para-boiled and lightly fried in butter. The toxic chemical is contained in the unripe arils of the fruit which is largely dispelled by light as the “jacket” opens.
